Charms of Casa São Roque

DISCOVER THE CHARMS OF CASA SÃO ROQUE: WHERE HISTORY AND ART COME TOGETHER

Casa São Roque, one of the cultural pillars of the eastern part of the city, is a house with over 200 years of history, open to the public as a cultural centre dedicated to contemporary art.

More than an art house, Casa São Roque is a testimony to the history, creativity and beauty of the encounter between the past and the present. The building’s historical significance is palpable: the walls of the house have borne witness to generations and generations of the Ramos Pinto family, and so the atmosphere carries an aura of authenticity that only places with history possess. However, the soul of Casa São Roque lies in its rotating art exhibitions.

While the interior evokes the bourgeois atmosphere of a palace, the exterior immediately transports us to a romantic setting. In the 19th century, Jacinto de Matos was responsible for the design of the São Roque Park Gardens. Thus, the space culminates in the house itself, a rotating art exhibition, a wine room and a splendid garden, so that you can enjoy the space in its entirety and have a complete and rewarding experience. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, an art lover, looking for an escape from the ordinary or a quiet place to be, Casa São Roque invites you to delight in its unique combination of past and present.

Casa São Roque favours access to musical culture. If you need an excuse to visit Casa São Roque, don’t miss the Concerto de Reis: a Portuguese Polyphony Concert that will take place at Casa São Roque on 5 January at 6pm. The Cupertinos will reveal the best of Portuguese polyphony in a unique concert.
