Villa J

Opening on October 24 at 4:00 p.m.

Casa São Roque – Centro de Arte

Casa São Roque, the former home of the Ramos Pinto family, opened in 2019 after extensive renovation. Its program started with Inventória, a solo exhibition by the Portuguese artist Ana Jotta (J), featuring works from the Peter Meeker Collection. Seven years later, Casa São Roque once again welcomes J (in Portuguese, the letter J is pronounced “Jota”). The artist’s work will occupy the upper floor on a permanent basis, with an opening reception on October 24, 2026 at 4 p.m.

Villa J is dotted with a series of wall drawings created with markers, paint, watercolors, and charcoal. J moved with surprising fluidity, driven by pleasure, as she herself says. In both rooms, J’s taste is evident in the color choices: pastel, pale, and soothing hues; pink, yellow, and green.

Among the numerous sources of inspiration that J draws upon and which consistently accompany her work, are fables and children’s books featuring various creatures from the natural world. And it’s everyday life, the most mundane things that usually go unnoticed because we see them so often, that J obsessively posts on Instagram as a daily journal.

Villa J, on the upper floor of Casa São Roque, will continuously showcase a rotating selection of works by J from the Peter Meeker Collection, dating from 1980 to 2026.

Notice of temporary closure

Casa São Roque is currently closed whilst preparations are being made for the new exhibition. It will reopen on 24 October.
